What a trading AI is (and what it CANNOT do)

3 min read

"AI that trades" has become the favorite label of half the schemes on the internet. It's worth separating what the technology actually does from what the marketing promises.

What a trading AI really does

Essentially, three things:

  1. It reads more than a human can. Prices, volumes, news, sentiment signals, across thousands of assets, every day, without fatigue and without bad coffee days.
  2. It applies rules without emotion. The value isn't just in the prediction; it's in executing the plan the same way on a good day and on a bad one. The AI doesn't "feel like this time is different".
  3. It records everything. Every decision is documented: what, when, why (at whatever level the system defines). That makes performance auditable, something a "guru trader" never offers.

What a trading AI does NOT do

  1. It doesn't predict the future. No system predicts. What a good system does is identify situations where the odds are slightly in its favor, and manage risk so that mistakes cost little and the wins pay more.
  2. It doesn't eliminate losses. An honest AI loses often. The difference lies in the discipline of the size of the losses, not in their absence.
  3. It isn't magic that removes the need for trust. There's still a human question: do you trust whoever built and operates the system? The answer should come from public proof, not promises.

The red flags (run if you see these)

  • Guaranteed or "consistent" returns with no drawdown in sight.
  • Pressure to deposit ON their platform (custody). Serious systems connect to YOUR brokerage, with YOUR keys.
  • A track record that conveniently starts last month.
  • "The AI is right 90% of the time": a win rate without average win/loss size is an empty number.

The right question

It isn't "is the AI smart?". It's: "is the process honest and verifiable?" An average AI with a public record and disciplined risk is worth more than a "super AI" that only shows screenshots.

Kamla is a swing trading AI with a simple contract: it decides, executes in paper trading accounts and publishes everything, bad days included. The method is ours; the results are public: kamla.ai/performance.
